What is simulation?
Simulation is an experience that imitates reality, in either the physical or social sense, with the goal of better understanding the real situation and how one interacts with it (Zapalska, Brozik, and Rudd, 2012). "In its broadest sense, simulation is imitation. [It has been] used it for thousands of years to train, explain and entertain. Thanks to the computer age,...simulation [is used] for all three" (IST, 2014, para.1)
Simulation is not a technology, but it may use technology - simulation is a technique (Lateef, 2010).
Many disciplines are integrating the use of simulation in training; so many types of learners, in different settings are receiving the benefit from this technique.
But how is simulation related to gamification?
Simulated experiences can be used in the design of games, in which case the elements of the game would be constructed in a reality-based situation. Simulation is beneficial because it:
Later in this module, you will get to experience simulation used within a game. But first, continue on to learn more about the best practices surrounding gamification....

Simulated experiences can be used in the design of games, in which case the elements of the game would be constructed in a reality-based situation. Simulation is beneficial because it:
- Engages the learners
- Requires that learners must critically think and make decisions
- Provides immediate feedback
- Is active learning, not passive
- Is FUN!!
