Imagine the possibilities!
Although we have yet to fully realize all that gaming technology can provide within the classroom and beyond, we have witnessed a variety of simulation/gaming applications in healthcare, aviation, and the classroom. One of our examples will demonstrate flight simulation allowing pilots to simulate flying, learning what to do in case of distress, alongside logging flight hours in order to gain their pilots license. In another example, you will see how gaming is also gaining ground in the healthcare industry helping patients in severe pain and/or those who suffer from PTSD to help divert their fear. According to a 2011 Seattle Magazine article, video game developers crafted several gaming-inspired projects that went "far beyond pixelated playthings to purposeful products with the potential to heal, teach and turn a profit" (Lambier, 2011).
These real world examples teach and reinforce global skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and communication. Check out the video below on incorporating blogs into online classes as a learning tool. In the following pages, there are two additional examples: HumanSim for medical training and X-Plane 10 for pilot training.
We hope these videos provide ideas, fostering conversation and dialogue with regard to teaching and innovation. To continue the conversation, head on over to our blog. We invite you to share your thoughts, engage in conversation, as well as network with one another.
